The "HMS" Rose

General Information

The HMS Rose is owned and operated by the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Prior to that she was bought from the HMS Rose Foundation of Bridgeport, CT, by 20th Century Fox for the movie Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, filmed in 2001.

For many years, Rose operated as a sail training vessel open to the general public. Her mission has changed for now, and so has her name; in San Diego she is known as Surprise in honor of her role in the movie. For information on sail training programs please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions or subscribe tot he newsletter.
